Shri Dinesh V. Ganvir has taken charge as the 55th Director General of the Geological Survey of India (GSI) under the Ministry of Mines, Government of India. With over three decades of experience in geological surveys, mineral exploration, engineering geology, and institutional leadership, he brings extensive scientific, technical, and administrative expertise to the role. A postgraduate in Geology from RTMNU University, Nagpur, he joined GSI on July 1, 1994, and has since served in key capacities across the central, northeastern, and northern regions. Prior to his current appointment, he was Additional Director General and Head of the Central Region in Nagpur, also holding additional charge as National Mission Head-II. His contributions span thematic mapping in the Western Bastar Craton, exploration of gold and diamonds in Maharashtra’s Sakoli Fold Belt, and geological studies related to the conservation of UNESCO World Heritage sites like Bhimbetka rock shelters and Ellora Caves. He has represented GSI at international forums such as the India-Peru Joint Working Group, the Russia-India Mining Sub-Group, and IMARC 2022 in Australia.
In his new role, Ganvir has reiterated his commitment to strengthening mineral security, scientific excellence, and technological advancement. His priorities include accelerating exploration of critical and strategic minerals through integrated geological surveys, advanced mineral prospectivity mapping, and systematic identification of scientifically robust mineral blocks for auction. This aligns with national objectives of reducing import dependence and advancing the vision of *Atmanirbhar Bharat*. He emphasized leveraging emerging technologies, advanced data analytics, and modern geological tools to enhance exploration accuracy and efficiency, while also focusing on laboratory infrastructure upgradation, analytical capabilities, and offshore exploration. Beyond mineral exploration, GSI will continue to contribute to basic geological research, landslide early warning systems, glacial and cryosphere studies, infrastructure projects, and disaster risk assessments—key inputs for informed policymaking, infrastructure planning, and sustainable development. His leadership underscores institutional empowerment, innovation, and performance recognition, with a renewed focus on collaboration across national missions, regional offices, and state units to enhance GSI’s effectiveness in supporting India’s mineral resource base, infrastructure growth, disaster resilience, and the broader vision of *Viksit Bharat 2047*.
