Sikkim declared India’s fully literate state under ULLAS

On 27 May 2026, Sikkim was officially declared a fully literate state under the ULLAS – Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram. The state recorded a literacy rate of 99.82 per cent, becoming one of the first states in India to achieve near-universal literacy under the New Education Policy framework.

India’s first indigenous Hydrogen-Powered Train approved

Indian Railways approved the rollout of India’s first indigenous hydrogen-powered train on the Jind–Sonipat section of Northern Railway (Haryana). Designed by RDSO and manufactured by ICF Chennai, the 10-coach broad-gauge trainset is described as the world’s longest and most powerful hydrogen train.

NITI Aayog convenes first ‘Education to Employment and Enterprise’ meeting

NITI Aayog held the first meeting of the high-powered Education to Employment and Enterprise (EEE) Standing Committee to align India’s education and skilling ecosystem with future labour-market demand.

National Sports Board notified

The Union Government notified the National Sports Governance (National Sports Board) Rules, 2026, establishing the National Sports Board as the apex regulator for sports federations in India.

Enforcement Directorate strength expanded

The Government of India approved a more than 60% increase in the sanctioned manpower of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to strengthen probes into money-laundering and economic offences.

11th NPT Review Conference ends without consensus

The 11th Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) concluded on 22 May 2026 at the UN Headquarters, New York, without a consensus declaration. The UN disarmament chief warned that three consecutive failed reviews raise concerns over the long-term viability of the global non-proliferation regime.

India–China hold 35th WMCC meeting in Beijing

India and China held the 35th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation & Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) in Beijing on 27 May 2026 to review the situation along the LAC.

India–Japan Strategic Partnership reaffirmed

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed the “vital role” of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership during a meeting with the Japanese Foreign Minister.

RBI keeps Repo Rate unchanged at 5.25%

The Reserve Bank of India, in its bi-monthly Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) review for FY 2026-27, kept the repo rate unchanged at 5.25% for the second consecutive meeting, maintaining a neutral stance. The MPC projected real GDP growth at 6.9% and CPI inflation at 4.6% for the current fiscal.

Canara Bank appoints Government Nominee Director

Shalini Pandit was appointed as Government Nominee Director on the Board of Canara Bank with effect from 14 May 2026.

BPCL leadership confirmed

Sanjay Khanna took charge as the Chairman and Managing Director of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL).

European Central Bank holds rates steady

The European Central Bank (ECB) kept its three key policy interest rates unchanged, with the deposit facility rate at 2.15%. The ECB cited inflation close to its 2% target and stable growth as reasons to maintain the “good place” stance.

US Federal Reserve maintains cautious tone

The US Federal Reserve, along with the Bank of England, continued to maintain steady policy rates through April–May 2026, with analysts projecting the Fed to ease toward a neutral setting of around 3.25% later in 2026.

5. International Sports Events

FIFA World Cup 2026 countdown

The FIFA World Cup 2026, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, is set to begin in June 2026. It will be the first edition featuring an expanded 48-team field.

IPL 2026 Final on 31 May

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 Final is scheduled for 31 May 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have qualified for the final after winning Qualifier 1.
