National News

Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2026 notified: The Ministry of Home Affairs has notified the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2026, introducing the electronic Overseas Citizen of India (e-OCI) card alongside the existing physical card. The rules amend the Citizenship Rules, 2009 framed under the Citizenship Act, 1955, and create a centralized digital database of OCI holders to enable paperless identity verification. The reform is expected to streamline immigration, banking KYC and travel processes for the Indian diaspora.

India’s FY26 GDP estimated at 7.6%: The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has revised India’s real GDP growth estimate for FY26 upward to 7.6%, from the earlier 7.4%. Nominal GDP growth is pegged at 8.6%. Quarterly real growth stood at 8.4% in Q2 and 7.8% in Q3 (Oct–Dec 2025). India remains the fastest-growing major economy for the fourth consecutive year, driven by strong private consumption (61.5% of GDP) and gross fixed capital formation.

ISRO unveils new Gaganyaan technology: On 27 May 2026, the Indian Space Research Organisation officially unveiled a new technological advancement aimed at enhancing the safety and mission duration of India’s human spaceflight programme, Gaganyaan. The upgrade focuses on improved life-support systems and orbital manoeuvring capabilities for Indian astronauts (Gaganyatris), keeping India on track for its maiden crewed mission.

International News

France to host G7 2026 Leaders’ Summit at Évian-les-Bains: France currently holds the G7 Presidency for 2026 and will host the G7 Leaders’ Summit from 15–17 June 2026 at Évian-les-Bains. The agenda is expected to be dominated by the war in Ukraine, the Middle-East crisis, AI governance, and global trade re-alignment.

WHO Director-General arrives in Kinshasa: The Director-General of the World Health Organization arrived in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, on 29 May 2026 to review the international response to an outbreak of a rare strain of Ebola virus. WHO has launched ring-vaccination drives and surveillance in affected provinces.

Russian drone strikes Romanian apartment building: A Russian drone, part of an overnight attack on Ukraine on 29 May 2026, crashed into an apartment building in eastern Romania, injuring two civilians. This is one of the most serious spillover incidents of the war on NATO territory and has prompted urgent NATO consultations under Article 4.

Shangri-La Dialogue 2026: The annual Asia-Pacific security forum hosted by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in Singapore is in progress, with delegates from India, the US, China, Japan and ASEAN debating Indo-Pacific security, the Middle-East crisis and Russia’s war on Ukraine.

RBI keeps repo rate unchanged at 5.25%: The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Reserve Bank of India maintained the policy repo rate at 5.25%, the Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) rate at 5.00% and the Marginal Standing Facility (MSF)/Bank Rate at 5.50%, preserving a 50-bps LAF corridor. The stance remains “neutral”, balancing growth and inflation. Earlier in February 2026, the RBI had cut the repo rate by 25 bps from 5.50% to 5.25%.

Emirates NBD to acquire 74% in RBL Bank: The RBI has approved UAE-based Emirates NBD‘s proposal to acquire up to 74% stake in RBL Bank for approximately USD 3 billion — the largest foreign direct investment in an Indian private-sector bank to date. The deal, once concluded, will reshape India’s mid-sized private banking landscape.

Term Money Market widened: The RBI has permitted non-bank entities — NBFCs, corporates, Housing Finance Companies and All-India Financial Institutions — to participate in the Term Money Market, deepening short-term rupee funding and improving monetary transmission.

Fraud-loss compensation framework announced: The RBI Governor announced a forthcoming framework under which customers will be compensated up to ₹25,000 for losses arising from small-value fraudulent digital transactions, strengthening consumer protection in the digital payments ecosystem.

Penalties on banks and fintechs: The RBI imposed monetary penalties on Union Bank of India, Central Bank of India, Bank of India and fintech firm Pine Labs for regulatory non-compliance — fines ranged from ₹3.1 lakh to ₹95.4 lakh.

IMF downgrades global growth to 3.1%: The International Monetary Fund has revised its global GDP growth forecast to 3.1% for 2026, down from the earlier 3.4%, citing the Middle-East war, energy-price volatility and tariff-related trade frictions.

G7 Finance Ministers’ Communiqué, Paris (19 May 2026): The G7 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors met on 18–19 May 2026 in Paris, joined by the heads of the IMF and the World Bank Group. The communiqué focused on stabilising energy markets, supporting Ukraine, addressing debt distress in low-income countries and accelerating reform of multilateral development banks.

IMF and World Bank resume relations with Venezuela: Both institutions have formally resumed engagement with Venezuela after a 2019 freeze. Venezuela has requested access to USD 5 billion in Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) it holds, to be used for infrastructure, electricity and water improvements.

Debt-service pressure on Africa: According to recent IMF/World Bank analyses, African governments are spending close to one-fifth of their revenues on interest payments in 2025, with four out of five spending more on debt-service than on health or education combined.

French Open (Roland-Garros) 2026 – Day 7, 30 May: Saturday’s order of play features the Women’s and Men’s Singles Third Round and Doubles Second Round. Felix Auger-Aliassime headlines Court Philippe-Chatrier, while reigning women’s champion Coco Gauff (No. 4 seed) faces in-form Austrian Anastasia Potapova. Earlier in the week, young Brazilian João Fonseca caused the upset of the tournament by defeating Novak Djokovic in a five-set epic.

IPL 2026 Final – RCB vs Rajasthan Royals at Ahmedabad: The final of the Indian Premier League 2026 will be played on 31 May 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. Royal Challengers Bengaluru have qualified for their fifth IPL final, where they will face Rajasthan Royals, who defeated Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2.

Shangri-La Dialogue side-events: Bilateral defence dialogues at the Singapore forum will run through the weekend, with India’s Defence Minister addressing the plenary on Indo-Pacific maritime security.

Major National or International Appointments

New Chief of Defence Staff (CDS): On 9 May 2026, the Government of India appointed Lt General N.S. Raja Subramani (Retd) as the new Chief of Defence Staff. He will also function as Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Military Affairs (DMA).

Canara Bank — Government Nominee Director: Shalini Pandit was appointed as the Government Nominee Director on the board of Canara Bank on 14 May 2026.

IFFCO-MC Crop Science: Dileep Sanghani was elected as the new Chairman of IFFCO-MC Crop Science.

Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL): Ambrish Tripathi was selected to lead Human Resources at BEL on 14 May 2026.

Senegal governance crisis: Senegal is facing a major political crisis after its Prime Minister was sacked, followed within 48 hours by the resignation of the Speaker of Parliament, creating a serious legislative-executive vacuum in the West-African nation.

United Kingdom — Ministerial reshuffle: A series of resignations from the UK Government in May 2026 — including that of Miatta Fahnbulleh — triggered a Cabinet reshuffle. New Parliamentary Under-Secretaries appointed include Nesil Caliskan (Housing, Communities & Local Government), Natalie Fleet (Home Office), Catherine Atkinson (Justice) and Preet Kaur Gill (Health and Social Care).

Major Inventions and Discoveries

118 new exoplanets discovered: Astronomers at the University of Warwick announced the confirmation of 118 new exoplanets along with around 2,000 high-quality candidates, using machine-learning algorithms applied to data from NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The discovery, reported on 3 May 2026, marks one of the largest single batches of confirmed exoplanets to date.

Artemis II — first crewed mission beyond Low Earth Orbit since 1972: NASA’s Artemis II lunar flyby mission, launched in April 2026 with a crew of four astronauts, became the first crewed flight beyond Low Earth Orbit since Apollo 17 in 1972, and the first to carry a person of colour, a woman and a non-US citizen beyond LEO.

NASA Glenn Research Center — new lightweight material: Engineers at NASA’s Glenn Research Center, Cleveland, have developed a new material that could allow astronauts to pack significantly lighter for future Moon missions.

CSIRO — 110+ new marine species classified: Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) classified more than 110 newly discovered marine species — including sea anemones, rays, crabs and sponges — from deep-sea surveys.
