Relevance for Banking, SSC & RBI Grade B exams: Polity & Governance
Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu inaugurated a workshop for stakeholders on the revised UDAN scheme, presenting the revised UDAN guidelines to the aviation industry. The workshop, held today by the Ministry of Civil Aviation in Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, gathered key aviation sector stakeholders to deliberate on the future planning of regional air connectivity in the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the ‘Revised UDAN’ scheme on July 4, 2026, from Jodhpur Airport. The workshop, attended by Minister of State for Civil Aviation Shri Murlidhar Mohol, Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha, and Airports Authority of India Chairman Vipin Kumar, commenced with a digital exhibition showcasing the scheme’s achievements and transformative impact on improving regional air connectivity nationwide. A short film on UDAN’s success was also screened.
Mr. Naidu highlighted that India, which had 65 airports in 2001 and 74 by 2014, has seen an addition of 90 operational airports in the last 12 years by reactivating 55 unutilized and unserved airstrips. He attributed this transformative growth, making India the third-largest domestic civil aviation market, to Prime Minister Modi’s visionary UDAN scheme and the National Civil Aviation Policy 2016. The revised UDAN scheme removes the seat cap on RCS airfares for large aircraft (over 80 seats) and extends viability gap funding assistance for airline operators for up to 5 years, with a phased reduction after the third year. It also includes provisions for ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ aircraft acquisition, such as 2 HAL Dhruv helicopters for PHL and 2 HAL Dornier aircraft for Alliance Air, and outlines a market-based approach for airlines to select airports and routes. The scheme targets the development of 100 airports over the next 10 years with approximately ₹12,159 crore in budgetary support, aiming for a developed India by 2047.
For Banking, SSC, and RBI Grade B aspirants, this development is significant under Polity & Governance. It highlights government initiatives for infrastructure development and regional economic growth, which are crucial for understanding India’s economic landscape and policy direction. The revised UDAN scheme’s focus on expanding regional air connectivity, promoting balanced regional development, and making air travel accessible to the common man reflects broader government objectives that can influence banking sector growth (e.g., financing for aviation infrastructure, increased economic activity in tier-2 and tier-3 cities) and require a robust understanding of public policy for administrative roles.
The details of the revised scheme, such as changes in viability gap funding, aircraft acquisition under ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’, and the market-based approach for airport selection, demonstrate the government’s evolving strategies in public-private partnerships and economic stimulus. Questions in exams could focus on the scheme’s objectives
