India Becomes World’s Top Ship Recycling Nation in 2025

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) announced that India became the world’s leading ship recycling nation in 2025, raising its global share to 35.4% from 30.1% in 2024 and increasing volumes to 2.99 million gross tons (GT) — a nearly 60% rise from 1.86 million GT — surpassing its Maritime India Vision (MIV) 2030 target five years ahead of schedule. The achievement was reported in the UNCTAD ‘Review of Maritime Transport 2025’. The Alang-Sosiya yard in Gujarat handles about 97% of India’s ship recycling.

Amit Shah Launches Four Digital Policing Apps for ICJS

Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched four digital policing applications of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB)Abhigyan, Criminal Procedure Identification (CrPI), e-Prosecution 2.0 and e-Forensics 2.0 — at the 26th All India Fingerprint Conference in New Delhi. The apps strengthen the Integrated Criminal Justice System (ICJS) through AI-driven biometric identification and digital prosecution. He also launched NAFED’s e-auction portal NAFEX.in.

VOC Port Emerges as Model for Green Maritime Growth

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced that V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA), Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, has emerged as a model for sustainable maritime development, recording a 45% reduction in net carbon emissions. It was recognised as a Scope-2 Emission Free Port by the MoPSW.

NHAI and NCAER Sign MoU for Transportation Research Centre

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) signed an MoU with the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) to set up India’s first permanent, independent research centre dedicated to the economics of transportation, mobility and logistics, located at NCAER headquarters in New Delhi.

India and Israel Sign MoU on Public Sector Auditing

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India signed an MoU with the Supreme Audit Institution (SAI) of Israel to strengthen cooperation in public sector auditing, focusing on the use of Artificial Intelligence, data analytics and digital audit tools. The MoU followed a meeting between CAG K. Sanjay Murthy and Israel’s State Comptroller Matanyahu Englman.

QS World Future Skills Index 2027: India Ranks 13th

Global higher-education analytics firm Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) released the QS World Future Skills Index 2027, in which India secured 13th position globally with an overall score of 89.4 out of 100, ranking 1st in South Asia and 1st among lower-middle-income countries. The United States (99.2) topped the index, followed by Australia and the United Kingdom. India ranked 5th on the ‘Future of Work’ indicator.

UN Public Service Forum 2026 Held in Tbilisi, Georgia

The United Nations Public Service Forum (UNPSF) 2026 is being held in Tbilisi, Georgia from 23 to 25 June 2026 under the theme ‘Transforming Public Institutions: Advancing Innovation, Participation, and Inclusion’, coinciding with UN Public Service Day (23 June).

India and China Discuss Gradual Normalisation of Ties

Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in New Delhi to discuss gradual normalisation of bilateral relations, covering border management and the resumption of people-to-people exchanges.

RBI Issues Revised TReDS Directions, 2026

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued the RBI (Trade Receivables Discounting System) Directions, 2026 to simplify the onboarding of MSME sellers and allow financiers to avail credit guarantee for exposures. TReDS is an electronic marketplace where MSMEs convert approved invoices into immediate cash by auctioning receivables to banks and eligible financiers.

GRSE Becomes India’s 29th Navratna CPSE

The Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), Ministry of Finance, upgraded Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd from Miniratna Category-I to Navratna status, making it India’s 29th Navratna CPSE. GRSE’s revenue rose nearly 300% to Rs 7,002 crore in FY26. Navratna status allows investment up to Rs 1,000 crore or 15% of net worth per project without prior government approval.

MeitY Awards IndiaAI Fellowship to 7 Chandigarh University Students

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) awarded the IndiaAI Fellowship to 7 students of Chandigarh University, each receiving Rs 1 lakh for innovative projects using AI and Machine Learning in education, disaster response, traffic management and healthcare. The fellowship operates under the IndiaAI Mission’s Future Skills pillar.

FATF Removes Algeria and Namibia from Grey List

At its plenary held from 17–19 June 2026 under the Mexican Presidency of Elisa de Anda Madrazo, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) removed Algeria and Namibia from its ‘grey list’ (enhanced monitoring) after anti-money-laundering reforms, while placing Angola, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, DR Congo, Kenya and South Sudan under enhanced monitoring.

IMF Approves $257 Million Arrangement for Barbados

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Executive Board approved a 36-month US$257 million Precautionary Stand-By Arrangement for Barbados and concluded Article IV consultations with Cyprus, reflecting continued IMF support for macroeconomic stability in small economies.

Belgian theoretical physicist François Englert, co-author of the Brout–Englert–Higgs mechanism that explains how fundamental particles acquire mass, passed away on 18 June 2026 aged 93. He shared the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physics with Peter Higgs after the Higgs boson was confirmed at CERN in 2012.
