What the IBPS PO 2026 Exam Actually Is

The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection Probationary Officer (IBPS PO) is the national-level gateway that every graduate in India must cross to become an officer in any of the 11 public-sector banks that use the common recruitment process. Conducted by IBPS, the exam is held once a year and leads to appointment as a Probationary Officer in banks such as PNB, Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank and others. It is not a single test but a three-tier filter: prelims, mains and interview. Only candidates who clear each tier in sequence are placed on the final merit list and offered a post.

How the Three Tiers Work

Preliminary Examination – The First Cut

The prelims is a 60-minute online test of 100 objective questions divided into three sections: English Language (30 questions, 20 minutes), Quantitative Aptitude (35 questions, 20 minutes) and Reasoning Ability (35 questions, 20 minutes). There is one-third negative marking for every wrong answer. The purpose is to eliminate roughly 85-90 % of applicants before they reach the mains. A common mistake is to treat prelims as a warm-up; in reality it is a high-pressure hurdle where sectional cut-offs are as important as overall marks.

Mains Examination – Depth Over Breadth

The mains shifts from speed to accuracy. It is a 180-minute test with four sections: Reasoning & Computer Aptitude (45 questions, 60 minutes), General/Economy/Banking Awareness (40 questions, 35 minutes), English Language (35 questions, 40 minutes) and Data Analysis & Interpretation (35 questions, 45 minutes). The mains is where most candidates who relied on speed alone fall behind; the questions are longer, the reasoning puzzles denser and the banking awareness section demands daily reading rather than last-minute cramming.

Interview – The Personality Filter

Candidates who clear mains are invited to a face-to-face interview of 100 marks. The panel assesses communication skills, subject knowledge and suitability for a customer-facing role. The interview score is added to the mains marks (weighted 80:20) to produce the final merit list. A frequent error is to treat the interview as a formality; in practice, candidates who fail to articulate why they want to join banking or who cannot explain their DAF entries are filtered out here.

Vacancies and How Fierce the Competition Is

The actual PO vacancy count for 2026 will be published there once the window closes.

Who Can Sit the Exam – Eligibility in Brief

The eligibility rules—age ceiling, minimum qualification, nationality and number of attempts—are published in the official notification. Candidates should verify their category, age and educational certificates against the notification before applying; no relaxation beyond what is officially stated is permitted.

Stage-wise Preparation Plan – A 12-Month Skeleton

Months 1-3: Build the Core Engine

  • Quantitative Aptitude: Master percentages, ratios, averages and DI sets from previous prelims papers. Aim for 90 % accuracy at 1.5 min per question.
  • Reasoning Ability: Solve 30–40 puzzles daily (floor-based, circular, scheduling). Use an error log to track repeated mistakes.
  • English Language: Read one editorial from daily current affairs and underline new words; then write a 250-word summary in 15 minutes.

Months 4-6: Speed Under Pressure

  • Prelims Mocks: Take one full-length IBPS PO 2026 mock test on Examophobia every Sunday under 60-minute time limits. Review every question you got wrong within 30 minutes of finishing.
  • Sectional Strategy: Fix a sectional cut-off target (e.g., 15/30 in English, 25/35 in Quant, 22/35 in Reasoning). Do not chase attempts; chase accuracy first.
  • Current Affairs: Build a monthly capsule covering RBI policies, bank mergers and global indices. Use it to answer GA questions in mains.

Months 7-9: Mains Specialisation

  • Mains Mocks: Switch to 180-minute full-length tests with the descriptive paper attached. Simulate exam hall conditions—no phone, no breaks.
  • DA & Reasoning: Learn to read long data tables in under 90 seconds. Practice 5-set DI blocks to build stamina.
  • Descriptive Writing: Write two letters and one essay every week. Use the 7-step structure (introduction, 3 body paragraphs, conclusion, value-add sentence).

Months 10-12: Final Polish and Interview Readiness

  • Revision Sprints: Re-do every mock you have taken; tag questions by concept and re-attempt only the ones you missed.
  • Interview Prep: Record a 2-minute self-introduction and watch it back. Prepare 10 bank-specific questions (e.g., “Why PNB?”).
  • Health & Sleep: Maintain 7 hours of sleep; avoid caffeine 4 hours before prelims day to keep pulse steady.

Pitfalls That Separate the Also-Rans from the Finalists

  • Over-attempting in Prelims: Chasing 70+ attempts in Reasoning often leads to 10–12 silly mistakes. Target 55–60 net correct; the cut-off is usually 55–60 across categories.
  • Ignoring the Descriptive Paper: Many candidates clear mains on GA alone and then fail the descriptive cut-off. Practice writing two letters and one essay every week from month six onwards.
  • Banking Awareness as an Afterthought: GA is not a sc
