Relevance for Banking, SSC & RBI Grade B exams: Science & Technology
Tamil Nadu’s recent accolades in wildlife conservation highlight innovative approaches to protecting its elephant population. Following two consecutive elephant deaths from illegal gunshot injuries in 2022, a campaign titled ‘Ozhippom Thuppakkiyai, Kaapom Yanaigalai’ was launched in the Hosur Forest Division, leading to the voluntary surrender of 239 illegal country-made guns. This people-centric initiative, which included extensive public awareness and the threat of sniffer dog enforcement, significantly reduced poaching and improved public cooperation with the Forest Department. Concurrently, an AI-based surveillance and early-warning system introduced in the Madukkarai forest range of the Coimbatore Forest Division has been instrumental in preventing elephant deaths on railway tracks, facilitating approximately 2,800 safe crossings since February 2024 by generating over 6,000 alerts and coordinating responses from track patrols, station masters, and loco pilots.
For Banking, SSC, and RBI Grade B aspirants, these initiatives demonstrate the practical application of technology and community engagement in addressing critical environmental challenges. The success of the AI-based elephant warning system exemplifies how advanced technology can be leveraged for real-time problem-solving and risk mitigation, a concept relevant to understanding technological advancements in financial services and data security. The campaign against country-made guns showcases effective public policy implementation, community mobilization, and regulatory enforcement, which are crucial for comprehending governance, social welfare schemes, and legal frameworks pertinent to economic and administrative roles. These examples underscore the importance of interdisciplinary knowledge, combining science and technology with social and administrative strategies, for sustainable development and effective resource management.
