1. Nepal Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal’s visit to India – UPI–NPI link launched

Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal concluded a 3-day official visit to India (5–7 June 2026) at the invitation of External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar. Three key outcomes: launch of Person-to-Person (P2P) linkage between India’s UPI and Nepal’s NPI; an MoU between MeitY’s Digital India BHASHINI Division and Kathmandu University to jointly develop multilingual language technologies and DPI; and handover of 84 India-funded post-2015-earthquake reconstruction projects to Nepal.

2. Piyush Goyal launches BHAVYA Portal for 100 industrial parks

Union Commerce & Industry Minister Piyush Goyal launched the BHAVYA Portal in New Delhi to operationalise the Bharat Audyogik Vikas Yojana (BHAVYA), a ₹33,660-crore flagship scheme to develop 100 world-class industrial parks over six years. It is implemented by NICDC under DPIIT through a 51:49 Centre–State partnership, with central support of up to ₹1 crore per acre for core infrastructure.

3. Rapido partners MoRTH to promote RahVeer Scheme

Ride-hailing platform Rapido (Roppen Transportation Services) partnered with the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways to promote the RahVeer Scheme, which rewards citizens (₹25,000 plus certificate) for helping road-accident victims in the golden hour. Over 4 lakh Rapido captains across 400+ cities took the RahVeer Pledge simultaneously – earning a Guinness World Record.

4. Regional Meteorological Centre inaugurated at Lucknow

Union MoS (IC) Dr. Jitendra Singh and UP CM Yogi Adityanath jointly inaugurated the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Lucknow, upgraded from the 1894 Lucknow Meteorological Observatory. Under Mission Mausam, the centre operates 3 Doppler Weather Radars, 107 Automatic Weather Stations and 140 Automatic Rain Gauges, serving UP, Uttarakhand and adjoining regions.

5. Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan completes 10 years

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare began nationwide celebrations marking the 10th anniversary of the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA), launched on 9 June 2016 to provide assured, comprehensive and free antenatal care to all pregnant women on the 9th of every month.

International News

1. SIPRI Yearbook 2026: India fifth-largest military spender

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) released its Yearbook 2026. India was the world’s fifth-largest military spender in 2025 with expenditure of USD 92.1 billion (up 8.9%), and its nuclear arsenal rose to an estimated 190 warheads (January 2026). Global military spending surged for the 11th straight year to USD 2.9 trillion; the USA (USD 954 bn), China (USD 336 bn) and Russia (USD 190 bn) ranked top three. The nine nuclear states together held nearly 12,187 warheads.

2. Putin offers Su-57 stealth fighter with joint production in India

Russian President Vladimir Putin, on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), offered India the 5th-generation Sukhoi Su-57 (Felon) stealth fighter with full technology transfer and joint production in India, supporting the ‘Make in India’ defence-indigenisation drive.

3. ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan suspended

Karim Khan, Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), was suspended pending a decision by the Assembly of States Parties on allegations of misconduct, which he denies.

4. WHO urges Uganda to reopen DR Congo border

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged Uganda to reconsider closing its border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, a step taken to stop the spread of Ebola.

1. RBI launches twin USD-INR forex swap facilities

The RBI introduced two special USD–Rupee forex swap facilities to attract foreign-currency inflows: one for fresh FCNR(B) deposits, and one for eligible External Commercial Borrowings (ECBs) of average maturity 3 years and above and Overseas Foreign Currency Borrowings (OFCBs). Both are accessible through Authorised Dealer (AD) Category-I banks.

2. Sahamati Foundation recognised as SRO for Account Aggregator ecosystem

The RBI recognised Sahamati Foundation as the Self-Regulatory Organisation (SRO) for India’s consent-based Account Aggregator (AA) ecosystem, which spans about 1,120 regulated entities, 17 operational AAs and 294+ million linked accounts.

3. Fitch cuts India’s FY27 GDP growth forecast to 6.4%

In its June 2026 Global Economic Outlook, Fitch Ratings lowered India’s FY2026-27 GDP growth forecast by 30 bps to 6.4% (from 6.7%), while projecting recovery to 6.7% in FY28. India’s CPI inflation stood at 3.5% in April 2026; Fitch also trimmed global growth for CY26 to 2.4%.

4. Government unveils G-Sec and FPI reforms

The Ministry of Finance announced reforms to deepen the Government Securities (G-Sec) market and boost Foreign Portfolio Investor (FPI) participation, including tax exemptions on interest income and on long-term and short-term capital gains from G-Secs.

1. World Bank and Japan agree to deepen cooperation

World Bank Group President Ajay Banga and Japan’s Finance Minister agreed to strengthen collaboration on helping developing countries build resilient supply chains and energy systems, unlocking investment, jobs and long-term growth.

2. Adani Ports wins USD 70-million Argentina LNG contract

Adani Ports and SEZ (APSEZ) secured a 10-year, USD 70-million marine-services contract for Argentina’s first LNG export project (Southern Energy FLNG, San Matías Gulf) through a 51:49 JV with Meridian Group – marking APSEZ’s entry into South America. Argentina plans to export up to 10 MT of LNG annually to India from 2027.

International Sports Events

1. India tops inaugural World Yogasana Championship 2026

India dominated the first-ever World Yogasana Championship 2026, held at EKA Arena, Ahmedabad (4–8 June), with 114 medals (102 gold, 9 silver, 3 bronze). Japan finished second and Argentina third. The mascot was ‘Veer the Lion’; organisers included World Yogasana, Yogasana Bharat and the Indian Olympic Association.

2. Alexander Zverev wins French Open 2026 men’s title

Germany’s Alexander Zverev beat Italy’s Flavio Cobolli 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-1 in the Roland-Garros 2026 men’s singles final (7 June) for his first Grand Slam title – the first German man to win a major since Boris Becker in 1996. Mirra Andreeva had won the women’s title.

3. Antonelli becomes youngest Monaco GP winner

Mercedes’ 19-year-old Italian driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli won the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix, becoming the youngest Monaco GP winner in history and recording his fifth consecutive victory of the season. Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) was second and Isack Hadjar (Red Bull) third.

4. Savitha Shri Baskar wins Asian chess gold

Indian IM Savitha Shri Baskar (19) won gold in the Women’s section of the Asian Individual Chess Championship 2026 at Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, with 7.5/9, directly qualifying for the 2027 FIDE Women’s World Cup. China’s Kong Xiangrui won the Open section.

1. Swaminathan Janakiraman reappointed RBI Deputy Governor

The Government of India reappointed Swaminathan Janakiraman as Deputy Governor of the RBI for two more years, effective 26 June 2026. First appointed in June 2023, he oversees the Department of Supervision. The other Deputy Governors are Poonam Gupta, Shirish Chandra Murmu and Rohit Jain.

2. Han Seong-sook nominated as South Korea’s next Prime Minister

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung nominated Han Seong-sook, Minister for SMEs and former first woman CEO of Naver Corporation, as the next Prime Minister. On parliamentary approval she will become only the second woman PM in South Korea’s history.

3. Willie Walsh named IndiGo CEO

Former British Airways and IATA chief Willie Walsh has been named Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo, India’s largest airline.

Resignation or Dismissal

1. Campbell Wilson steps down as Air India CEO

Campbell Wilson resigned as CEO & MD of Air India before completing his term; he had led the Tata-owned carrier since July 2022.

2. South Korean PM Kim Min-seok to step down

Incumbent South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min-seok is stepping down, prompting the nomination of Han Seong-sook as his successor.

Major Inventions and Discoveries

1. NASA announces Artemis III crew

On 9 June 2026, NASA announced the Artemis III crew: commander Randy Bresnik, pilot Luca Parmitano (ESA), and mission specialists Andre Douglas and Frank Rubio. The mission will demonstrate Orion’s rendezvous and docking with commercial human landing systems being developed by SpaceX and Blue Origin.

2. NASA-ISRO NISAR satellite beams first radar images

The NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellite – the first to carry both L-band and S-band radars – returned its first radar images of Earth’s surface, ahead of full science operations later this year.
