1. Jan Samarth Portal completes four years

The Jan Samarth Portal, India’s first unified digital platform for credit-linked government schemes, completed four years on 6 June 2026. As per government data (as on 1 June 2026), the portal has processed about 54.10 lakh applications worth ₹3,00,951 crore, with digital approvals to 49.55 lakh beneficiaries amounting to ₹2,76,493 crore. The portal covers 16 credit-linked central schemes across agriculture, MSME, housing, renewable energy and livelihoods, is available in 8 languages, operates 24×7 and connects 269 lending institutions.

2. India releases Biodiversity Report 2026 and first Nagoya Protocol national report

The Government of India released India’s Biodiversity Report 2026, drawing insights from the 7th National Report to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), along with India’s first National Report on the Nagoya Protocol on access and benefit-sharing of genetic resources – an important milestone in India’s biodiversity governance.

3. Cabinet’s ₹9,585-crore clean mobility scheme for Delhi-NCR

The Union Cabinet has approved a two-year scheme, implemented through the National Capital Region Planning Board (NCRPB), to replace old BS-IV (or earlier) trucks and buses registered in Delhi-NCR with BS-VI or electric vehicles. The total outlay is ₹9,585 crore, including ₹5,041 crore central support and about ₹1,601 crore in tax concessions from participating states (Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh). Implementation will be by MoRTH and MoPNG under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs’ NCRPB.

International News

1. Peru votes in presidential election today

Peruvians vote on Sunday, 7 June 2026 to elect a new president, with polls indicating a tight race between hard-right candidate Keiko Fujimori and leftist Roberto Sánchez.

2. West Asia conflict: Strait of Hormuz traffic at a standstill

The ongoing Iran–Israel conflict has brought ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz – the world’s most critical oil chokepoint – to a virtual standstill, forcing companies to find alternative routes for oil, fertiliser and consumer goods. Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun condemned an Israeli strike on Lebanese territory as a “flagrant violation of Lebanese sovereignty”, while Pakistan urged an end to the war.

3. Pope Leo XIV: Iran war is not a ‘just war’

Pope Leo XIV, during his six-day visit to Spain, said the war in Iran does not qualify as a “just war” under Catholic teaching.

4. Ukraine strikes Russian refineries

Ukraine launched drone attacks on Russian refineries and military sites, including targets near St. Petersburg, coinciding with the final day of an international economic forum there.

1. RBI MPC keeps repo rate unchanged at 5.25%

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the RBI, after its meeting of 3–5 June 2026, kept the policy repo rate unchanged at 5.25% with a neutral stance, prioritising growth amid global uncertainty and imported, supply-driven inflation. The RBI also revised its FY2026-27 GDP growth projection downward from the earlier 6.9% estimate, citing the impact of the West Asia conflict on energy prices and trade.

2. RBI eases norms for small NBFCs

The RBI issued final guidelines allowing small NBFCs with assets below ₹1,000 crore that neither use public funds nor have a customer interface to be classified as “Unregistered Type I NBFCs”, exempt from registration. Eligible NBFCs can apply for deregistration by 31 December 2026.

1. IMF trims global growth forecast to 3.1%

The IMF has downgraded global growth for 2026 to 3.1% (from 3.3% projected in January), while headline inflation is seen rising to 4.4% owing to the West Asia conflict and the spike in oil, gas, fertiliser, aluminium and helium prices following disruption of the Strait of Hormuz.

2. Global public debt nearing 100% of GDP

Per the IMF’s fiscal assessments, global public debt is projected to approach 100% of world GDP by 2028, driven largely by major economies, amid rising interest burdens and conflict-related spending pressures. The IMF’s Global Financial Stability Report flags elevated financial-stability risks and possible further tightening of financial conditions.

1. Mirra Andreeva wins French Open 2026 women’s title

Nineteen-year-old Mirra Andreeva defeated Poland’s Maja Chwalińska 6-3, 6-3 in the French Open (Roland-Garros) 2026 women’s singles final on 6 June 2026 to claim her first Grand Slam title. She is the youngest Roland-Garros women’s champion since Iga Świątek (2020). The men’s singles final is scheduled for today, 7 June 2026.

2. India vs Afghanistan one-off Test underway

India are playing a one-off Test against Afghanistan at New Chandigarh (6–10 June 2026) – a historic red-ball fixture between the two nations. The year 2026 also features the Men’s T20 World Cup (India & Sri Lanka), the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

1. Rohit Jain appointed RBI Deputy Governor

RBI Executive Director Rohit Jain has been appointed Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India for a three-year term. He has spent about three decades at the RBI, including key roles in banking supervision.

2. Priyank Bharti named CEO of Online Gaming Authority

Priyank Bharti has been appointed CEO of the Online Gaming Authority of India, while the UIDAI CEO has been given additional charge as CEO of the India AI Mission.

3. Prakash Rajpurohit joins MIDHANI board

IAS officer Prakash Rajpurohit has been appointed Government Nominee Director on the board of defence PSU Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (MIDHANI) with effect from 5 June 2026.

1. RBI cancels banking licence of Paytm Payments Bank

The Reserve Bank of India cancelled the banking licence of Paytm Payments Bank Limited with immediate effect – the most significant regulatory removal of a payments bank from the Indian banking system to date. Exam tip: remember the regulator (RBI), the entity (Paytm Payments Bank) and the action (licence cancellation).

1. JWST detects methane on interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has uncovered unusual chemistry in the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, including the first direct detection of methane on a visitor from another star system.

2. AI-designed universal coronavirus vaccine clears first human test

Scientists have successfully tested an AI-designed universal coronavirus vaccine in humans for the first time, finding it safe and well tolerated – a milestone for AI-driven drug design.

3. Single-chip photonic processor demonstrated

Researchers have created a tiny photonic chip that can generate, steer and read light-based information in one device – a major step toward ultra-fast, energy-efficient computing.

4. Gaganyaan-1 uncrewed mission slated for H2 2026

ISRO’s Gaganyaan-1 uncrewed test flight, carrying the half-humanoid robot Vyommitra, is scheduled for the second half of 2026. Over 8,000 ground tests are complete, and Vyommitra’s integration with the crew module began on 28 April 2026. Crewed flight (H1) is targeted for 2027.
