1. Union Cabinet approves Phase 2A of Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project

The Union Cabinet, on 10 June 2026, approved Phase 2A of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project, further expanding the metro network in Gujarat’s largest city. The extension is designed to improve connectivity between Ahmedabad and the rapidly growing Gandhinagar–GIFT City corridor, decongest road traffic and provide an eco-friendly mass rapid transit option. Exam point: Metro rail projects are implemented under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) jointly with state governments through 50:50 special purpose vehicles.

2. Kerala Cabinet approves ‘Priyadarshini’ free-travel scheme for women

The Kerala Cabinet, on 10 June 2026, approved the Priyadarshini scheme, under which women can travel free of cost on ordinary services of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC). The scheme aims to increase women’s workforce participation and mobility, on the lines of similar schemes such as Karnataka’s Shakti scheme and Delhi’s free bus travel for women.

3. Two Indian seafarers killed as vessel is attacked off Oman; India urges de-escalation in the Gulf

Two Indian seafarers were killed and one reported missing after a commercial vessel carrying 24 Indian crew members was attacked off the coast of Oman amid sharply escalating tensions in the Gulf region. Twenty-one crew members were rescued. India summoned the US Chargé d’Affaires in New Delhi and urged immediate de-escalation, underlining the safety of Indian nationals and free movement of commercial shipping through the region’s sea lanes.

4. Five new judges appointed to the Supreme Court under Number of Judges Amendment Ordinance

Five new judges have been appointed to the Supreme Court of India following the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Ordinance, 2026, which raised the sanctioned strength of the court. Exam point: The strength of the Supreme Court is fixed by Parliament by law under Article 124 of the Constitution; the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956 has been amended several times, most recently raising the strength from 34.

1. Iran announces closure of the Strait of Hormuz after fresh US strikes

Iran announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz following fresh US military strikes, in a major escalation of the ongoing US-Iran conflict in the Gulf. The two countries have exchanged strikes since a helicopter was downed near the strait earlier this week. Exam point: The Strait of Hormuz, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, is the world’s most important oil chokepoint – roughly a fifth of global petroleum liquids consumption passes through it.

2. G7 Summit 2026 to be held at Évian-les-Bains, France

The 2026 G7 Summit will take place at Évian-les-Bains, France. Alongside member states – Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US – France has indicated that ‘middle powers’ and major emerging economies will be encouraged to take part in dialogue. Exam point: The G7 has no permanent secretariat; the presidency rotates annually among members, and the European Union participates as a non-enumerated member.

3. European Commission proposes 21st sanctions package on Russia, includes Indian entities

The European Commission proposed its 21st package of sanctions against Russia, with focus areas including energy, crypto assets, financial services and trade. Notably, the proposed list includes certain Indian entities accused of facilitating the re-export of sanctioned goods, a development being closely watched in New Delhi.

4. Africa CDC warns DR Congo Ebola outbreak spreading at unprecedented pace

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) warned that the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is spreading at an unprecedented pace, calling for urgent international support for surveillance, vaccination and treatment capacity in the affected provinces.

1. UPI goes live in Cambodia through NPCI–ACLEDA Bank partnership

India launched Unified Payments Interface (UPI) acceptance in Cambodia through a partnership between NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL) and Cambodia’s ACLEDA Bank. Indian travellers can now make QR-code payments at over 4.5 million Cambodian merchants. Exam point: UPI is already accepted in countries such as Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Singapore, the UAE and France.

2. NPCI rolls out verified-name display for UPI transfers

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) introduced a safety feature under which UPI apps display the recipient’s verified bank-registered name when a user scans a QR code or enters a mobile number – replacing custom names and aliases. The measure is aimed at curbing fraud by making it easier to identify the actual beneficiary before authorising a payment.

3. SEBI’s 50:50 cash margin rule for F&O takes effect

Under SEBI’s new 50:50 margin framework, at least 50% of margin requirements for Futures & Options (F&O) trading must be maintained in cash or cash-equivalent instruments. Investors can no longer meet margin obligations entirely through pledged shares. The rule is intended to reduce leverage-driven risk in the derivatives segment.

4. RBI introduces Digital Payments – E-Mandate Framework, 2026

The Reserve Bank of India introduced the Digital Payments – E-Mandate Framework, 2026, aimed at making recurring digital payments more transparent, secure and customer-friendly, with clearer rules for mandate registration, pre-debit notifications and cancellation of recurring payment instructions.

1. World Bank: global growth prospects remain subdued over 2026-27

In its latest Global Economic Prospects assessment, the World Bank said growth prospects over 2026-27 are uneven across regions and generally subdued amid a less favourable global trade environment. Real per-capita income growth is projected to average about 2.8% in 2026-27 – insufficient to recover pandemic-era losses or generate adequate job creation in developing economies.

2. Fitch trims global growth forecast to 2.4% for 2026

Fitch Ratings, in its June 2026 Global Economic Outlook, revised global growth down by 20 basis points to 2.4% for calendar year 2026, citing trade tensions and conflict-related uncertainty. For India, Fitch projects FY27 GDP growth of 6.4%, recovering to 6.7% in FY28 on robust consumer spending and investment.

1. FIFA World Cup 2026 kicks off today: Mexico face South Africa at the Estadio Azteca

The FIFA World Cup 2026 begins today, 11 June 2026, with hosts Mexico taking on South Africa at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City – a repeat of the 2010 opener. This is the biggest World Cup ever: 48 teams (up 50% from 32) playing 104 matches across three co-host nations – the USA, Canada and Mexico. The final will be played at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey, on 19 July 2026.

2. Three opening ceremonies across the host nations; Infantino defends ticket prices

Uniquely, the 2026 World Cup features three opening ceremonies – the first in Mexico on 11 June, followed by Canada and the USA on 12 June. At the tournament launch press conference, FIFA President Gianni Infantino defended the tournament’s ticket pricing and addressed criticism after a Somali referee was denied entry to the United States.

1. Prashant Sitaram Lokhande appointed CBSE Chairperson; Varun Bhardwaj named Secretary

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved Prashant Sitaram Lokhande as the new Chairperson of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), succeeding Rahul Singh. Varun Bhardwaj, earlier Director in the Department of Higher Education, was appointed Secretary of CBSE, succeeding Himanshu Gupta.

2. D K Shivakumar sworn in as Chief Minister of Karnataka

D K Shivakumar was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Karnataka on 3 June 2026, with G. Parameshwara as Deputy Chief Minister, following a leadership rotation within the ruling Congress party. He becomes the third Vokkaliga Chief Minister of Karnataka from the Indian National Congress.

1. Siddaramaiah resigns as Karnataka Chief Minister

Siddaramaiah resigned as Chief Minister of Karnataka on 28 May 2026 after months of speculation over a leadership transition, submitting his resignation to the Governor. His exit paved the way for Deputy CM D K Shivakumar’s elevation under the party’s internal power-sharing arrangement.

2. Rahul Singh moved out of CBSE to Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare

Outgoing CBSE Chairperson Rahul Singh was transferred to the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare as part of a senior bureaucratic reshuffle that also saw new appointments at the top of the CBSE.

1. ISRO lines up GISAT-2 geo-imaging satellite for launch

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has scheduled the launch of GISAT-2, a geo-imaging satellite designed to provide near real-time images of the Indian subcontinent, especially for quick monitoring during natural disasters. Exam point: GISAT satellites operate from geostationary orbit (~35,786 km), unlike conventional remote-sensing satellites in sun-synchronous low-Earth orbit.

2. Astronomers discover GJ 887 d, a habitable-zone super-Earth just 10.7 light-years away

Astronomers reported the discovery of GJ 887 d, a super-Earth exoplanet in the habitable zone of the red dwarf star GJ 887, located only 10.7 light-years from the Sun – one of the closest potentially habitable-zone planets found to date, making it a prime target for atmospheric study by next-generation telescopes.
