1. D.K. Shivakumar sworn in as 24th Chief Minister of Karnataka
D.K. Shivakumar took oath as the 24th Chief Minister of Karnataka on 3 June 2026 at the Glass House, Lok Bhavan, Bengaluru. Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot administered the oath, and 13 Congress MLAs were sworn in as ministers in the first phase of cabinet formation. Shivakumar succeeds Siddaramaiah and had earlier been unanimously elected leader of the Congress Legislature Party on 29 May 2026, capping a four-decade political journey.
2. PM SVANidhi Scheme completes six years; extended up to March 2030
The PM Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) scheme completed six years of implementation. Launched in 2020 by the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs, it has disbursed over 1.12 crore collateral-free loans to street vendors. The Union Cabinet has approved a restructured extension of the scheme up to March 2030, with enhanced loan limits and expanded coverage to Census Towns and peri-urban areas. Loans are given in three progressive tranches of ₹15,000, ₹25,000 and ₹50,000 with interest subsidy and credit guarantee support.
3. BRO celebrates 37th Raising Day of Project UDAYAK
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) marked the 37th Raising Day of Project UDAYAK, a flagship initiative established in 1990 to strengthen road infrastructure in India’s easternmost frontier regions. The project plays a vital role in improving connectivity for both defence logistics and local civilian populations in the North-East.
International News
1. Iranian strike hits Kuwait international airport
An Iranian missile strike on Kuwait’s international airport killed at least one person and wounded around 60 others, according to Kuwait’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The attack drew sharp condemnation from several Middle Eastern countries amid the wider regional conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States.
2. Israel and Lebanon agree on ceasefire implementation
Israel and Lebanon reached an agreement on the implementation of a ceasefire following two days of talks in Washington, in a joint statement with the United States. The two sides agreed to reconvene the political and security tracks in the week of 22 June 2026 with a view to a comprehensive agreement.
3. US imposes new tariffs on 60 countries over forced-labour concerns
The United States announced new tariffs targeting around 60 countries, including Canada, citing forced-labour concerns in supply chains. Separately, the United Nations warned that the developing El Niño condition is likely to amplify an already hot summer across large parts of the world.

1. RBI Monetary Policy Committee meeting concludes; resolution due 5 June
The RBI Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), chaired by Governor Sanjay Malhotra, is concluding its three-day bi-monthly meeting held from 3–5 June 2026, with the policy resolution scheduled for announcement on 5 June 2026. Economists widely expect the benchmark repo rate to be held at 5.25% with a neutral stance. In its previous review, the RBI projected FY2026-27 GDP growth at around 6.9% and retail inflation at 4.6%.
2. June 2026 financial changes for households and investors
June 2026 brings several money-related changes. The first instalment of advance tax for FY2026-27 is due by 15 June 2026. The markets regulator SEBI has rolled out stricter margin requirements for the cash and derivatives segments, while updated income-tax rules also take effect this month – points frequently tested in banking and SSC exams.

1. IMF flags up to $50 billion in near-term financing demand
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said near-term demand for IMF financing could reach about $50 billion as the war in the Middle East strains the global economy. World Bank President Ajay Banga indicated the Bank is preparing roughly $20–25 billion in rapid financing to support affected economies.
2. IMF trims global growth forecast to 3.1%
The IMF has revised its global GDP growth forecast for 2026 down to 3.1%, from 3.4% in 2025, in its latest World Economic Outlook update. It also raised inflation projections for both advanced and emerging economies, warning that many emerging-market central banks may have to tighten policy even as growth slows.

1. ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 to begin in England
The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 is scheduled to be held in England and Wales from 12 June to 5 July 2026. It is one of two T20 World Cups in the cricket calendar this year, with the men’s edition set to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
2. India to tour for Test & ODI series against Afghanistan
The Indian cricket team is set to play a lone Test and a three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, with the series beginning on 6 June 2026. In golf, the 2026 U.S. Women’s Open is among the major championships scheduled this month.

1. Priyank Bharti appointed CEO of the Online Gaming Authority
Priyank Bharti has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Online Gaming Authority, the new regulatory body for India’s online gaming sector. In related administrative moves, the CEO of UIDAI has been given additional charge as CEO of the India AI Mission, and IAS officer Saurabh Vijay earlier took charge as CEO of UIDAI.
2. Raghav Chadha named Chairman of Rajya Sabha Committee on Petitions
Member of Parliament Raghav Chadha was appointed Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Committee on Petitions, strengthening the parliamentary oversight panel that examines public grievances and petitions.

1. Siddaramaiah steps down as Karnataka Chief Minister
Siddaramaiah resigned as Chief Minister of Karnataka, paving the way for the leadership transition to D.K. Shivakumar on 3 June 2026. His resignation followed an internal Congress arrangement on rotational leadership of the state government.

1. New lizard species ‘Mesalina bishnoi’ discovered in Rajasthan
Scientists of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) discovered a new lizard species, ‘Mesalina bishnoi’, in the Thar desert of Rajasthan. This marks the first confirmed record of the genus Mesalina in India. The species has been named in honour of the Bishnoi community, long known for its conservation ethos and protection of desert wildlife.
2. PRATUSH radiometer to study the early universe from the Moon
Scientists at the Raman Research Institute (RRI), Bengaluru, in collaboration with ISRO, are developing the PRATUSH (Probing ReionizATion of the Universe using Signal from Hydrogen) radiometer, designed to study the early universe from the radio-quiet far side of the Moon. ISRO is also progressing towards its first crewed Gaganyaan flight planned for 2026.
