1. India and UK launch Critical Minerals Global Supply Chain Observatory (GSCO)
India and the United Kingdom launched the Critical Minerals Global Supply Chain Observatory (GSCO) in New Delhi on 4 June 2026. It was jointly launched by Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy and UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper. The observatory is a data-driven platform to track global critical-mineral supply chains, identify supply risks and generate market intelligence for policymakers and industry. It has been developed jointly by TEXMiN at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and the University of Cambridge, and supports secure access to resources needed for clean energy, electric mobility and advanced manufacturing.
2. World Environment Day 2026 observed on 5 June
World Environment Day 2026 was observed worldwide on 5 June 2026 with the theme “Climate Action” under the slogan “For Climate. For Our Future.” The global host this year was Azerbaijan, with celebrations centred in its capital Baku. The UNEP-led campaign (#NowForClimate) emphasised nature-based solutions – protecting wetlands, forests and oceans – to build resilience against climate change.
3. Education Ministry launches Prime Minister Research Chair (PMRC) Scheme 2026
The Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education opened applications for the Prime Minister Research Chair (PMRC) Scheme 2026 from 1 June 2026. The flagship initiative aims to attract accomplished Indian-origin researchers from globally reputed institutions to premier Indian HEIs and national laboratories across 13 thematic areas of national priority. It offers three categories – Young Research Fellows, Senior Research Fellows and Research Chairs – with seven lead institutions including IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras and IISc Bengaluru.
4. Nepal’s Foreign Minister on official visit to India
Shisir Khanal, Nepal’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, is on an official visit to India from 5 to 7 June 2026, holding bilateral talks aimed at strengthening trade, connectivity and people-to-people ties between the two neighbours.

1. Russia to strengthen air defences after Ukrainian drone strikes
President Vladimir Putin said Russia will strengthen its air defences after a wave of Ukrainian drone and missile attacks reached deep inside Russian territory, including St. Petersburg, casting a shadow over his showcase economic forum in the city. The escalation kept global energy markets on edge.
2. Lebanon ceasefire called ‘last chance’; UNIFIL peacekeeper killed
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun described the implementation of a Washington-brokered ceasefire with Israel as the “last chance” for a comprehensive truce. Separately, the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported that one peacekeeper was killed and others wounded when they came under mortar fire in south-eastern Lebanon.
3. First phase of the Global AI Governance Framework rolled out
International regulatory bodies began implementing the first phase of the Global AI Governance Framework, a collaborative effort coordinated through the United Nations to set common standards for the safe and responsible development of artificial intelligence.

1. RBI introduces Digital Payments E-Mandate Framework, 2026
The Reserve Bank of India rolled out the Digital Payments – E-Mandate Framework, 2026, under which users must receive a 24-hour pre-debit notification before any recurring auto-debit. The alert must specify the merchant name, amount, timing and reason for the debit – a major consumer-protection step for recurring online payments.
2. SEBI’s 50:50 margin rule fully implemented for F&O
Market regulator SEBI’s fully implemented 50:50 margin rule now requires that at least 50% of the margin for Futures & Options (F&O) trading be maintained in cash or cash-equivalent instruments, tightening risk management in the derivatives segment.
3. RBI eases exit route for small NBFCs
The RBI issued final guidelines allowing certain small Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) with assets below ₹1,000 crore – that neither use public funds nor maintain a customer interface – to voluntarily exit the regulatory framework, reducing compliance burden on low-risk entities. 2. IMF raises 2026 inflation forecasts
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) raised its 2026 inflation forecast for advanced economies from 2.2% to 2.8%, and for emerging markets from 4.8% to 5.5%, citing wartime disruptions in West Asia, elevated energy prices and supply-chain pressures.
3. ECB keeps policy steady near 2% inflation target
The European Central Bank (ECB) signalled it is in a “good place,” with euro-area inflation close to its 2% target and growth positive though below potential, indicating a largely steady rate path for the period ahead.

1. Neelkanth Mishra appointed India’s Executive Director at the World Bank
Economist Neelkanth Mishra has been appointed India’s Executive Director at the World Bank, Washington D.C., for a three-year term; the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) cleared the appointment on 4 June 2026. Currently Chief Economist at Axis Bank, he succeeds Parameswaran Iyer and will represent India, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Sri Lanka on the World Bank Board.
2. Rohit Jain takes charge as RBI Deputy Governor
Rohit Jain, a career central banker with nearly three decades at the RBI, was appointed Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India for a three-year term beginning May 2026, having earlier handled key portfolios including banking supervision.

1. Karnataka Minister Ramalinga Reddy resigns over portfolio allocation
